Clean, dry and safe to bring inside.
Metal removal and kiln drying for reclaimed wood: nails, screws and bolts removed, boards scanned and dried to indoor moisture content and treated for insects.
- Metal: Removed and scanned
- Moisture: Dried to about 6 to 8 percent
- Insects: Heat treatment in the kiln

What it is, and why it matters.
Old wood arrives with nails, hardware and sometimes insects or moisture. Before it goes into a home it should be de-nailed, scanned and dried to a stable moisture content. Kiln drying also helps kill insects and stabilizes boards so they behave after installation.
We remove nails and hardware by hand and with tools, scan each board with a metal detector, and dry to the moisture content that indoor use calls for. Nashville customers rely on this step for floors, walls, furniture and mantels, and we document it for designers and builders who need to know how material was prepared.

Kiln Drying and De-Nailing: common questions
Is kiln drying necessary for reclaimed wood?
Old wood is often dry, but not always evenly, and kiln drying also treats insects and evens out moisture. For indoor use we recommend it unless a board is known to be stable.
Can you guarantee there is no metal in a board?
We scan every board and remove what we find, but no scan is perfect. That is why we mill carefully and advise using the right blades and eye protection.
